For decades, Back to the Future fans have asked Tom Wilson to channel his infamous on-screen bully, Biff Tannen. But those days are officially over. The actor says he’s done repeating Biff’s catchphrase and roughing people up for laughs. After years of playing along, Wilson now wants fan interactions to feel more human.
Tom Wilson on why he won’t call Back to the Future fans ‘Butthead’ again
Tom Wilson, who played Biff Tannen and multiple members of the Tannen family across the Back to the Future trilogy, recently explained his change of heart on Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast. Wilson said he spent the first 25 years of the film’s popularity saying yes to nearly every fan request, including calling people “butthead,” Biff’s most famous insult.
Eventually, though, he decided it was time to stop. “After 25 years, I’m not gonna knock anyone on the head, and I’m not gonna call anyone ‘butthead’ anymore,” he said. Wilson made it clear that the decision wasn’t about rejecting fans, but about setting boundaries.
Wilson explained that he no longer wants interactions where he has to physically act out Biff’s bullying behavior. “If you wanna take a picture of me, I’m not beating you up,” Wilson said. Instead, he prefers normal photos where both people smile and move on, without recreating scenes from the movie.
The actor opened up about the downside of being forever linked to one famous role. He said that after a while, it stops feeling human, people don’t really see you anymore, just the character. To him, it felt like turning into a novelty, the last stop in some “treasure hunt“ where everyone just wants a catchphrase, a quick clip, or an autograph.
His bond with Back to the Future has also changed with time. What once felt like both a massive gift and a creative cage doesn’t weigh on him the same way anymore. He still gets recognized, but it happens less now, especially since younger fans haven’t grown up with the film. And he’s totally okay with that, as he put it, the movie belongs to “a long, long time ago.”
