Matt Damon on Why He Doesn’t Like Oscar Campaigning

Oscar-winning actor and The Odyssey star Matt Damon recently spoke about awards season and shared why he is not a fan of campaigning for the Oscars.

What Matt Damon said about Oscar campaigning

In an interview with Netflix’s Skip Intro podcast, Krista Smith, while promoting his movie The Rip, Matt Damon said he has been part of recent awards-season conversations but made it clear where he stands on Oscar campaigning.

He shared his honest thoughts on the process. He said, “What I don’t like is this idea of campaigning. It seems completely backwards to me. It’s just odd.” He added that award campaigns might help keep movies in the public conversation.

“And maybe it’s good for movies, just having it all out there, and gets the culture thinking and talking about movies. I hope that’s the case.” Damon also admitted he understands why campaigning exists.

With so many movies competing for attention, awards season can help some movies stand out amid what he described as “so much noise.” Even though he dislikes the process, he has benefited from it in the past.

He got an Oscar for the co-writing Good Will Hunting and throughout the years received numerous nominations for the acting awards. He might still be able to get back to the awards recognition despite his opinions. He stars in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming movie The Odyssey, which has already created a great deal of interest.

Damon feels that working on The Odyssey was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. He also believes it may be the last large-scale movie he will ever get to make. For now, fans can watch Damon in The Rip, which is now streaming on Netflix.

The movie is scheduled to be released on July 17, 2026.
