Matt Damon shared his thoughts on cancel culture during their promotion for Netflix’s The Rip on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast. Damon reflected on the serious consequences of being canceled, noting that one would rather prefer to go to jail. He believes that once you go to jail and pay the debts, it ends there, but being canceled publicly follows you for the rest of your life.
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck comment on cancel culture
In a conversation on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, the host initiated the topic of cancel culture and how it affects celebrities’ lives. He described it as “this idea that one thing you said or one thing you did, and now we’re going to exaggerate that to the fullest extent and cast you out of civilization for life.” Damon added, “in perpetuity.”
The Good Will Hunting actor further revealed that some people would have just preferred to go to jail for 18 months rather than get canceled. This is because after getting released, they pay the debts and can be done with it then and there. However, he says it differs in the case of being canceled, further revealing, “The thing about that getting kind of excoriated, publicly like that, it just never ends. And it’s the first thing that… you know, it just will follow you to the grave.”
In the past, Damon faced massive backlash for using a homophobic slur in his personal life, but later admitted that he stopped using it after his daughter explained to him why it was wrong. In an interview with The Sunday Times, he said the slur he used had a “different application” when he was a child. He then revealed that his daughter was offended by the word and wrote a long treatise explaining to him why the word is “dangerous.” Since then, he has stopped using it.
