‘Holy S***’: Timothée Chalamet Recalls Being Threatened on Marty Supreme Set

Timothée Chalamet revealed that a background actor he was working with threatened him while filming a scene for Marty Supreme. Although the actor had hoped to elicit a genuine reaction for authenticity’s sake, the situation went further than he had expected. Taken aback by the threat, Chalamet later confronted the director, asking, “Who do you have me opposite, man?”

Timothée Chalamet and Marvel star Robert Downey Jr. took part in a Q&A session at the DGA Theater in Los Angeles on Wednesday, January 14. During their conversation, the Dune actor recalled a scary moment while filming his latest hit, Marty Supreme.

Chalamet said, “I won’t say who, but in that motel sequence, there are a lot of non-actors that I find it really thrilling to work with. Sometimes it would take multiple takes to really get something out of them.”

The Wonka star went on to explain that he was “getting in the guy’s face” to invoke genuine anger. He recalled telling Josh Safdie, the director, that the background actor wasn’t as responsive as he’d like.

To his horror, the 30-year-old pushed the actor a little too far. “I did another take, and then the guy said, ‘I was just in jail for 30 years. You really don’t want to f— with me. You don’t want to see me angry,” Chalamet shared. Surprised by the response, he approached Safdie, asking, “I said to Josh, Holy s—. Who do you have me opposite, man?”

Directed by Josh Safdie, Marty Supreme is a sports drama loosely based on the life of table tennis player Marty Reisman. The film follows Marty’s relentless determination to leave his job as a shoe salesman to take part in international table tennis tournaments. The movie also features Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, and Kevin O’Leary, among others.

During the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, Chalamet won the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy award for this role. He also received the Best Actor award at the Critics’ Choice Awards earlier this month. Now, all eyes are on the actor as the complete list of this year’s Oscar nominations is set to be released on January 22, less than a week from now.
