Golden Globes Producer Defends Original Score Omission From Live Telecast

The 2026 Golden Globes honored some of the year’s biggest movie moments, but fans quickly spotted a glaring miss. The Best Original Score award didn’t air live. Ludwig Göransson won for Sinners, but viewers watching on CBS didn’t see him accept it. Now, producer Glenn Weiss has revealed the reason why this category got cut from the televised show.

Glenn Weiss addresses Original Score category omission from Golden Globes live telecast

During the January 11 Golden Globes ceremony at the Beverly Hilton, Ludwig Göransson’s Best Original Score award was handed out by Charli XCX and Joe Keery. However, it didn’t make it to the live broadcast.

That move ruffled some feathers, including fellow composer Hans Zimmer, who spoke up before the show. “I think it’s a shame not to honor those people — my friends — who work so hard to become a voice,” Zimmer said to Variety. He also pointed out just how tough film scoring is and how essential composers are to a movie’s success.

Producer Glenn Weiss later clarified in a post-show chat with Variety that the production team doesn’t personally choose which awards air. Weiss explained, “I’ve seen on other shows that they literally surprise winners by handing awards on red carpets, or different ways of doing it.” In such a case, “it should happen in front of their peers and everybody else,” Weiss said. So, Göransson still received his award in front of peers in a even if it didn’t air.

As per Weiss, Göransson’s speech is online for everyone to see and was treated with respect. It also includes a shoutout to Sinners director Ryan Coogler. Weiss wanted the online moment to feel just as meaningful as any award on TV. “It’s not just a name mentioned or a throwaway,” Weiss said. He clarified that the aim was to handle the moment with the same recognition and gravitas as any televised award.

The decision to cut Original Score from the live broadcast came just two days before the Globes, catching some composers off guard. Weiss said the nominees were informed, but the timing and reasoning weren’t explained in detail.
