Matt Damon subtly took a dig at his long-running feud with Jimmy Kimmel via Ben Affleck. He sent a letter through Affleck congratulating Kimmel on winning the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Talk Show. Damon also joked about Kimmel’s cancellation, with the host taking the letter from Affleck’s hand, calling the note “not nice,” and adding that he would keep it with him forever.
Ben Affleck reads Matt Damon’s note for Jimmy Kimmel
The ‘Good Will Hunting’ actor recently sent a note to Kimmel through Affleck to congratulate him on his Critics’ Choice Award win. During their conversation at Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Affleck pulled out a note from his suit jacket and conveyed the message to Kimmel. He said, “Speaking of Matt, he wanted me to pass on a note he wanted me to share with you, which I thought was very nice.”
Kimmel reached out to take the note and read it; however, Affleck stopped him and said that he would do it for him instead. The note read, “Dear Jimmy, congratulations on the Critics’ Choice award. You should have gotten canceled a long time ago, maybe you would have got sympathy then, and so you could have won more than one minor movie award, like me.” As the note ended, Affleck believed it was very nice and put it on his table. Kimmel quickly grabbed the note and safely kept it with him. He then said, “No, it wasn’t a nice note, and I’ll take that note and I will save it forever.”
Kimmel and Damon have been playfully feuding for many years. In 2005, Kimmel randomly took Damon’s name on his talk show, even though the actor wasn’t invited as a guest. He ended the episode of his talk show by saying, “Apologies to Matt Damon, but we ran out of time.” Back then, Damon didn’t even know Kimmel personally.
The joke continued in 2006 when Damon finally appeared on the show. Kimmel cut him off again at the end of the episode, prompting Damon to pass a few curse words and storm off the set in apparent anger. Many viewers believed Damon’s performance in keeping the joke alive felt almost too real.
