Golden Globes Host Reveals Steve Martin’s Joke Went ‘Too Far’

Steve Martin backtracked on a joke he sent to this year’s host of the Golden Globes. As Nikki Glaser prepares to host the upcoming Golden Globe Awards, Glacier said that she has been reaching out to others for feedback. At her request, Martin sent her a joke to perform onstage, but she revealed that he quickly took it back, admitting it was “too far.”

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, comedian Nikki Glaser revealed that Steve Martin sent her a joke after she reached out to him for feedback. “Steve Martin sent in a joke through one of my writers. That was so nice,” she shared.

However, the Pink Panther actor later asked her to disregard it. “Then he said afterwards, ‘Actually, tell her: Don’t do that joke. That’s too far.’ And he was right. I did love the joke, but I don’t think I could say that.”

The 41-year-old comedian shared that she also reached out to Judd Apatow. “I saw Judd Apatow last night at a gig and said, ‘Please send me any notes you have,’” she said. To her disappointment, Apatow had no feedback for her. She recalled, “He seemed to have no notes, but he’s someone who’s hosted the Directors Guild Awards. He’s done this before.”

While Tina Fey and Amy Poehler co-hosted the event four times, Glaser became the first woman to host the Golden Globe Awards solo. The upcoming ceremony would be the second consecutive year she would be hosting the event.

When asked about the feedback she received after hosting the first time, the Emmy-nominated comedian said that “it was all positive.” She added, “It kind of tripped me up, man. Usually, you do something, and there’s a couple of people who don’t like what you did — or a couple of flaws you can find — and it was universally appreciated and well-reviewed. I’m not used to that. I don’t like that. It only sets me up for failure.”

“I just went back and watched it two days ago just to remind myself of what I liked, what I didn’t like,” she continued. “Well, damn, I kind of nailed it. And it scares me, because that was kind of lightning in a bottle. I got really lucky with some of the nominees. Everything worked out. So it’s a high bar. I’m kind of screwed.”
