The President revealed that Melania Trump disapproves of one of his signature rally routines. He explained that her objections center on how the behavior appears in public.
Melania Trump hates when Donald Trump dances
During a speech to Republican lawmakers, Donald Trump stated that his wife, Melania Trump, dislikes his dancing at campaign events. “My wife hates when I do this,” Trump said. “She’s a very classy person. She said, ‘It’s so unpresidential.’ I said, ‘But I did become president.'” Trump often ends his speeches by dancing to the song “YMCA,” using a distinctive arm movement that has drawn attention from the public and political figures (via Fox News).
Melania Trump has expressed that the dancing appears unpresidential. According to Trump, she told him, “Darling, it’s not presidential.” He added that she appealed to historical standards, saying, “Could you imagine FDR dancing?” Trump replied, “There’s a long history that perhaps she doesn’t know, because he was an elegant fellow, even as a Democrat.” President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was paralyzed from the waist down due to polio and used a wheelchair.
Trump also mentioned that Melania criticizes other campaign gestures he performs, including mimicking female weightlifters to make points about transgender athletes in women’s sports. “My wife hates when I do this,” he repeated while describing those gestures.
Despite her disapproval, Trump insisted his dancing was well-received. “Everybody wants me to dance,” he told lawmakers. He said the crowds “go crazy” when he dances. Still, he acknowledged, “I want to be more effusive, but I have somebody watching.”
At the end of the same speech, Trump repeated the weightlifting act and performed a short dance before leaving the stage. Melania Trump was not present at the event.
