Elon Musk’s Grok AI has recently flooded X with sexualized images of women without their consent, in what has become a very concerning development in the AI boom. Over the past few days, there have been numerous complaints and discussions about Grok generating AI images of real women, and even minors, when prompted by users. The backlash continues to gain momentum worldwide, with many countries taking action.
Elon Musk’s Grok AI criticised for creating sexualized images
Over the past week, many users have been asking Grok to remove the clothes of women in their photos, which the AI has been allegedly doing. It is digitally altering photographs to make women wear bikinis or very revealing clothes. The wave has taken over the world, with users coming to Grok for these hyper-sexualized images. This was already a concern for a while before it actually happened.
There have been numerous instances with Grok AI, including one involving Julie Yukari, a musician based in Rio de Janeiro. She posted a photo of herself just before midnight on New Year’s Eve, showing her in a red dress. The next morning, she woke up to comments from users asking Grok to strip her down to a bikini.
She initially did not think that the AI would comply, but soon found multiple digitally altered, near-naked photos of herself going around the internet. This sparked serious concern.
Moreover, Yukari was only one of the thousands of women who are experiencing this right now. Reuters also reported that there were several sexualized images of children.
This new phenomenon on X rang alarm bells for many countries. France’s ministers reported X to prosecutors and regulators over the disturbing images. India’s IT ministry said in a letter to X’s local unit that the platform failed to prevent Grok’s misuse by generating obscene content.
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Trade Commission have not commented on the backlash, however.
Alongside this, tempers remain high among the users, who have been repeatedly calling out Grok AI and Elon Musk for this gross misuse of the platform.
