Patrick Mahomes might not have been able to support Travis Kelce during the games, but that did not stop him from celebrating his friend’s major milestone from home. On January 5, Mahomes took to his social media to give a shoutout to Kelce for becoming the third tight end in NFL history to reach 13,000 career yards.
Patrick Mahomes cheers for Travis Kelce as he achieves major career milestone
On January 4, the Kansas City Chiefs lost their road game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Travis Kelce still made a historical record on a five-yard pass from third-string quarterback Shane Buechele, as he hit 13,000 career yards. After Mahomes and his backup, Gardner Minshew, went down with knee injuries, Buechele took their place.
Mahomes celebrated Kelce’s new milestone with a short but powerful post on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote, “13K!” with a strong arm emoji shortly after the tight end reached the mark. The official X account for the Kelce brothers’ New Heights podcast commented with a GIF of a playful moment between Kelce and Mahomes and several goat emojis.
Fans flooded the replies urging Mahomes not to let Kelce retire for at least one more year, amid rumours that the latter is considering stepping away after this season. One individual wrote, “Bring him back for one more! Get a young te or draft one he can mentor.” Another fan insisted, “Give us one more year Kelce….you can’t go out without Mahomes giving you your last catch!!”
Kelce addressed his rumoured retirement during a post-game press conference on December 25. When a reporter asked if that would be his last game on home turf, he dodged the question with humour. He said, “No. The only time it ever crossed my mind was when I was driving in the other day and I saw how much the Powerball was, and I was like, ‘Man. If I could just win that. I wouldn’t have to work another day in my life.'” He concluded that it was a decision he would make with his family, friends, and the organisation.
