Drake coined a new nickname for the music streaming giant Spotify by calling it Botify. The Canadian rapper made the offhanded remark during a recent stream with BenDaDonn. Interestingly, according to Spotify Wrapped 2025, Drake joined Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West as one of the most streamed artists on the platform.
Drake calls out Spotify with new nickname
Drake jokingly referred to Spotify as Botify during a recent stream with BenDaDonn. In a short snippet doing the rounds, BenDaDonn says, “Motivational background music?” Drake, who is fidgeting with his phone, commented, “You know what they don’t. But I guarantee that they…I can play it on Botify real quick.”
To which BenDaDonn replies, “I mean we will play it then and take us full screen before we go Black Jack.” It seems like BenDaDonn either did not understand Drake’s Botify joke or simply chose to ignore it.
Last year in November, the Canadian rapper accused Universal Music Group (UMG) and Spotify of inflating the popularity of Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us”. Notably, Lamar’s “Not Like Us” is a hard-hitting diss track directed towards Drake.
In his petition filed in a Manhattan court, Drake claimed Spotify and UMG artificially boosted “Not Like Us” popularity. The “Hotline Bling” rapper’s Frozen Moments LLC is accusing UMG of indulging in an illegal “scheme” to boost the diss track’s numbers (via Complex).
According to Variety, Drake is accusing UMG of engaging “in conduct designed to artificially inflate the popularity of ‘Not Like Us,’ including by licensing the song at drastically reduced rates to Spotify and using ‘bots’ to generate the false impression that the song was more popular than it was in reality.”
In October this year, U.S. District Judge Jeannette Vargas dismissed Drake’s lawsuit against Universal Music Group. Spotify also cleared the air in an exclusive statement to Complex. A spokesperson from the streaming giant said the platform “in no way benefits from the industry-wide challenge of artificial streaming.”
According to the spokesperson, Spotify has instead invested in “always-improving, best-in-class systems to combat it (artificial streaming).” The spokesperson even mentioned how Spotify religiously clears fake streams and bots from their end.
Interestingly, Drake was the second most-streamed artist in the 2025 edition of Spotify’s U.S. artist ranking. Notably, his music rival Lamar ranked fourth in the top ten list of most-streamed artists.
