Kevin Spacey plays a fictional version of himself in an Italian comedy series

Kevin Spacey is set to return to television later this month with a role in the Italian comedy series Minimarket. This marks his first television appearance since his removal from Netflix’s House of Cards in 2017. The series, produced for Italy’s state broadcaster RAI, will premiere on the streaming platform RaiPlay on December 26.

In Minimarket, Spacey appears as a fictionalized version of himself, as reported by Variety. The 10-episode series follows a man who works at a convenience store in Rome, portrayed by Filippo Laganà, and dreams of becoming a successful actor. Within the story, Spacey appears as an imagined presence in the man’s life. He serves as an “artistic conscience and unpredictable mentor.” The show has been described as “the experience of a man who has been on the world’s most important [movie and TV] sets” and “the recklessness of someone who does not realize that they have an Oscar-winner by their side.”

The role represents Spacey’s first television project in more than eight years. Following his departure from House of Cards, he appeared in a limited number of film projects. This includes Holiguards, which he also directed.

Spacey’s career was significantly impacted after multiple allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced beginning in 2017. He has consistently denied wrongdoing and was later cleared of sexual abuse charges in New York in 2022. He was also acquitted of sexual assault charges in London in 2023.

In recent months, Spacey has also publicly addressed rumors suggesting he was homeless. He stated in a social media post that comments about staying in hotels and short-term rentals had been taken out of context.
