Bachelor Nation Star Explains ‘Submissive Wife’ Comments After Backlash

The Bachelor Nation alum Madi Prewett has finally responded to the ongoing backlash. On her Stay True podcast from December 1, the television personality shared how she likes being a “submissive wife.” However, this statement did not sit well with the audience. In a recent episode of the podcast, she shed light on her previous remark.

Here is all you need to know about Prewett’s response to the online criticism.

Madi Prewett on criticism over ‘submissive wife’ comments

Madi Prewett, who rose to fame from The Bachelor Season 24, has clarified her “submissive wife” comments. On the December 15 episode of her Stay True podcast, she stated, “It just kind of grieved our hearts and my heart that there wasn’t context around it.” The 29-year-old added, “If you don’t explain what the Bible is saying and give context to it, then you just say that word flippantly.”

She explained how “it can be received in a really hurtful way” and that she and her husband, Grant Troutt, “just want to say sorry.” Prewett also shared that she understood that some might have associated the word “submit” with “abuse.” The podcast host said that this is because of “things that have happened to you or things that you’ve seen around you.”

Prewett added, “When you hear that word, you think of it meaning that if you’re a woman, that it means oppression, and that you have no voice and you are silenced and you are controlled.” She continued, “When you hear that word, I think it can strike a lot of different feelings. That is in no way of how I meant it of what the Bible is saying nor in how we live. Our marriage dynamic is not like that in any way.”

The TV personality expressed what she and her husband meant using the word “submissive” referring to marriage “roles.” “It’s not exercising this dominant power and authority,” Prewett shared. “It doesn’t mean that the wife is weak or passive or has no voice or is not equal with the husband. That’s not at all what submission means. Nor is it what we believe submission means when it’s talking about that in the Bible.”

Troutt then referred to verses from the Bible found in the book of Ephesians. He says in verses about wives, “It says, ‘Wives submit to your husbands.’ That’s where that word comes from.” This meant his wife sees him as “the spiritual leader of the home,” and not related to oppression.
