During his Dec. 15 visit to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Liu shared the sweet behind-the-scenes moment, explaining that soon after the proposal, Taylor Swift surprised Hsu with a congratulatory video after he reached out to the singer.
Hoping for a long shot, Liu said he contacted Swift through her publicist and asked if she might record a short message. To his amazement, she said yes and sent the video just two days later. “I reached out to Taylor through her publicist, and I said, ‘Hey, is there any way that I could convince you to make like a two-second video just to say congrats?’” Liu stated.
He said the surprise meant more because both he and Hsu are longtime Taylor Swift fans. Liu explained that his fiancée works in the music industry as a digital marketing executive and grew up with Swift’s songs as a big part of her life. According to Liu, the “Blank Space” singer’s music played a meaningful role in the early days of their relationship. He called the video message “the cherry on top.”
Hsu was taken aback when she saw the clip. “She was really emotional before, and then when I played that video, she just completely lost it,” Liu said. The Shang-Chi actor went on to praise Swift, calling her “absolutely just fantastic” and “so nice and so sweet.”
Liu and Hsu shared their engagement news back in May with a joint Instagram post that instantly set the internet buzzing. The duo also reportedly showed up together at Swift’s Eras Tour and the Eras Tour concert film premiere.
