Lone Survivor, the 2013 war movie starring Mark Wahlberg, is set to arrive on Netflix at the start of the new year. According to What’s on Netflix, the film will become available to stream on January 1, 2026.
Released in 2013, the film is directed by Peter Berg. It is based on the 2007 book by Marcus Luttrell and Patrick Robinson. Set during the war in Afghanistan in 2005, the film centers on a U.S. Navy SEAL unit led by Marcus Luttrell. The team takes on the mission to track and eliminate Taliban leader Ahmad Shah.
However, after encountering local civilians and adhering to their rules of engagement, the team is exposed. This leads to a deadly confrontation that leaves them severely outnumbered. The story focuses on the physical and moral challenges faced by the soldiers as they attempt to survive against numerous odds.
Wahlberg stars as Marcus Luttrell in the film. The supporting cast includes Taylor Kitsch as Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, Emile Hirsch as Danny Dietz, Ben Foster as Matthew Axelson, and Eric Bana as Lieutenant Commander Erik S. Kristensen.
Critically, Lone Survivor earned solid reviews, holding a 75 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 224 reviews. It also holds an 87 percent audience rating. Nicholas Barber of Metro writes, “It’s a heartfelt tribute to the brave young American soldiers who sacrifice their lives for their country, but it also makes that sacrifice seem like the most exciting extreme sport imaginable.”
Commercially, the film performed strongly in theaters, grossing over $154 million worldwide against a reported production budget of $40 million. Box Office Mojo reports that the film earned approximately $125 million at the domestic box office, with an additional $29 million coming from international markets.
