Sarah Drew says April’s delivery scene in Grey’s Anatomy was the ‘hardest’ to shoot

Sarah Drew has revealed that April Kepner’s devastating delivery episode in Grey’s Anatomy was one of the most difficult scene she has ever filmed.

Speaking recently about her time on the ABC medical drama, Drew said the episode in which April and Jackson lose their newborn son remains the most difficult scene she has ever filmed. The storyline involved April carrying a baby diagnosed with Osteogenesis Imperfecta type II, a fatal condition that ensured the child would survive only hours after birth.

Drew shared, “When I was eight months pregnant with my daughter Hannah. I had to play a labor delivery and death scene on Grey’s Anatomy… I had to have an induction termination and my baby was born and died in my arms.” The scene also required an extended shoot, with the production stretching across an entire day. The actress said, “I was eight months pregnant and it took 10 hours to shoot that scene, and I went home and went into premature labor and gave birth a month early and she was in the NICU for 2 weeks.”

Reflecting on the experience years later, Drew acknowledged the toll the episode took on her. “It’s definitely the hardest scene I’ve ever had to shoot. I laugh about it now. It was not funny at the time,” she said. Despite the difficulty, Drew said she remains proud of the work and its impact. She described it as “a beautiful story.”
