The gender-swapped TV reboot of a classic Disney movie has reportedly been scrapped. Holes, directed by Andrew Davis, came out in 2003 and received mostly positive reviews from critics. It was also considerably successful at the box office. Louis Sachar penned the screenplay based on his 1998 novel of the same name. Early in 2025, various outlets reported that Disney+ had ordered a Holes TV pilot. However, the latest update reveals that the project has been canceled.

Holes reboot series scrapped at Disney+

Disney+ is no longer moving forward with the pilot of a gender-swapped version of Holes, according to Deadline. Alina Mankin penned the episode, and Jac Schaeffer directed it. Additionally, Liz Phang was the showrunner for the now-canceled series. Shay Rudolph led the cast of the reboot that also included Greg Kinnear and Aidy Bryan.

As per Variety, the plot would have revolved around a teenage girl named Hayley as she arrived at a detention camp and encountered its brutal warden. The logline of the project reads, “In this reimagining of the beloved 1998 book from Louis Sachar, a teenage girl is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose.”

The original 2003 movie found success at the box office and garnered a 78% approval rating on the review-aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes. It also received several awards, including the Best Family Film at the 2004 Las Vegas Film Critics Society Awards.

The cast of the original movie includes Sigourney Weaver as Warden Louise Walker, Haleigh Ann Trickett as Young Louise, Jon Voight as Marion “Mr. Sir” Sevillo, Tim Blake Nelson as Dr. Steve Pendanski, Shia LaBeouf as Stanley “Caveman” Yelnats IV, Siobhan Fallon Hogan as Tiffany Yelnats, Khleo Thomas as Hector “Zero” Zeroni, Eartha Kitt as Madame Zeroni, and Henry Winkler as Stanley Yelnats III.
