Leonardo DiCaprio made it clear that directing a movie isn’t on his radar. Speaking with Martin Scorsese at TIME’s A Year in TIME event, the Oscar-winning star admitted he doesn’t see himself mastering the director’s chair. It’s not about a lack of interest. DiCaprio explained that his choice comes from a deep respect for cinema and the legendary directors he admires, especially Scorsese.
Leonardo DiCaprio explains why he has no plans to be a director
Leonardo DiCaprio, 51, opened up about being frequently asked if he plans to direct films, and his answer is a clear no. He told the audience he could never match what Martin Scorsese does and has no desire to try, stressing his admiration for the legendary filmmaker.
Looking back on his career, DiCaprio admitted he sometimes wished he had observed more of the filmmaking process. He explained that while he dives deep into his characters, he would have loved to be more of a “voyeur,” watching a master like Scorsese at work behind the camera.
“You play these characters, you try to get into the depth of their soul as much as you possibly can. And I would’ve loved to be much more of a voyeur … to watch what you do behind the camera,” Scorsese said ( via People).
DiCaprio also opened up about his long-time creative standing with Scorsese, working together on six films, including Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, and Killers of the Flower Moon. He called their relationship collaborative, with months spent hashing out ideas, debating scenes, and questioning every choice. “That’s been our process a lot, I think, working together … lots of questions, and lots of playing devil’s advocate about a way to approach things that may not be the most obvious direction,” he explained.
For DiCaprio, collaborating with Martin Scorsese has been a dream come true. He shared that as a child, he watched Scorsese and Robert De Niro’s films and knew he wanted to work with them one day. DiCaprio recalled how his father introduced him to Scorsese’s work, saying that if there was anyone to aspire to work with, it was the legendary director.
