Timothee Chalamet Didn’t Want To Get Buzz Cut for Dune

Timothee Chalamet has revealed that getting a buzz cut for Dune: Part Three was not a decision he welcomed, despite understanding its importance for the film. The actor shared that the now-confirmed new look surprised him just as much as it did fans when he debuted it earlier this year.

Timothee Chalamet didn’t want to cut his hair for Dune

Timothee Chalamet wasn’t ready to part with his hair. Over the summer, the actor was spotted with what appeared to be a buzz cut, which is a big change from his signature curls. The transformation was officially confirmed in October, but Chalamet has since clarified that the process happened gradually and reluctantly.

On December 12’s episode of The Graham Norton Show, the Oscar nominee explained that the haircut began on June 25 with what he described as a “3 millimeter hair cut” for Dune: Part Three. According to Chalamet, director Denis Villeneuve then repeatedly asked for the hair to be cut shorter.

When the idea of going down to a 1 millimeter cut was raised, Chalamet said he strongly resisted. “You know, your hair, weirdly we’re all attached [to our hair]. It’s kind of like our personalities, these follicles that grow out of our heads,” he said during the show. Despite his objections, he joked that his hair was ultimately “stolen.”

Timothee Chalamet went on to acknowledge that the buzz cut served a clear purpose for the film. He explained that the shorter hairstyle is about a major shift in Paul Atreides’ journey. “It’s supposed to be a nice character shift, and I’m playing 15, 20 years older,” he said, encapsulating that the physical transformation helped signal the character’s progression. Then, fellow guest Emma Thompson asked whether he sold his cut hair on eBay. Chalamet responded humorously, saying he “didn’t think of that.”

However, Chalamet has continued to maintain the buzz cut while promoting his other upcoming movie, Marty Supreme. The film is releasing on December 25, 2025.
