Sydney Sweeney Reveals How She Got the Lead Role in Christy

Sydney Sweeney has detailed how she landed the lead role in Christy. During a recent interview, the actor revealed that she became deeply moved while reading the story of boxing champion Christy Martin. This prompted her to contact the film’s director immediately.

Sydney Sweeney says she was ‘bawling’ her eyes out while reading Christy’s script

Sydney Sweeney has opened up about her reaction to discovering the script for Christy, the biographical film centered on champion boxer Christy Martin.

In a recent Variety conversation with Ethan Hawke, the actor recalled her first encounter with the script for Christy. Sweeney explained that she had been actively searching for a physically demanding project “in the MMA fighting space.” She said, “I grew up kickboxing, so I wanted to find something a little more physical.”

According to Sweeney, “Then my agent was like, ‘There’s a script going around about Christy Martin. Why don’t you read it?’” She said she was only halfway through before she began crying. “Halfway through the script — bawling my eyes out. I couldn’t believe that I had no idea who this woman was. I’d never learned about her,” the Euphoria star recalled.

Sweeney added that she contacted director David Michôd as soon as she finished reading. She explained, “The moment I finished, I got on a Zoom with the director [David Michôd], begging him to please let me do this project. I was like, ‘I will do anything for you. I will lose myself.’”

During the same interview, the actress also described throwing herself into the physical transformation without hesitation. She trained twice a day and gained approximately 35 pounds for the role. “I came to life,” Sweeney said.

The film follows Martin’s rapid rise in professional boxing and the influence she had on women’s sports. It also depicts the challenges she faced, including severe abuse from her husband, who also served as her trainer.
