Scarlett Johansson Addresses Her Support for Woody Allen Despite Allegations

It seems that, despite all the stir Scarlett Johansson‘s previous interview in support of Woody Allen caused, she still maintains her stance. The Marriage Story actress recently spoke out about her support for the veteran director who was accused of sexual assault by his own stepdaughter.

Scarlett Johansson discusses her support for Woody Allen

In 2019, Scarlett Johansson became one of the few actors to publicly side with Woody Allen. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the MCU star said back then, “I love Woody. I believe him, and I would work with him anytime.”

The 41-year-old had also said, “I see Woody whenever I can, and I have had a lot of conversations with him about it. I have been very direct with him, and he’s very direct with me. He maintains his innocence, and I believe him.”

Woody Allen was accused of sexual abuse by his stepdaughter, Dylan Farrow. The allegations have been around since 1992. While New York Social Services dismissed the claim, Allen was ostracized in the industry. The reaction only intensified after the #MeToo movement. Several stars who worked with the filmmaker turned against him, and he soon found himself at the periphery of Hollywood.

But this was not the case with Scarlett Johansson, who seemingly believed Woody Allen’s side of the story. The 90-year-old has maintained his innocence over the years.

In a recent interview with The Telegraph, in which Scarlett Johansson discussed her directorial debut, she addressed the reaction to her stance on Woody Allen. “I guess it’s hard to know,” she responded.

“You never know what the domino effect is, exactly. But my mom always encouraged me to be myself, [to see] that it’s important to have integrity, and stand up for what you believe in,” the actress who has collaborated with Allen on three occasions said.

Johansson added, “At the same time, I think it’s also important to know when it’s not your turn. I don’t mean that you should silence yourself. I mean, sometimes it’s just not your time. And that’s something I’ve understood more as I’ve matured.”

Woody Allen remains a controversial topic in Hollywood.
