Helena Bonham Carter opened up about her relationship with Tim Burton in his new docuseries. She spoke of both their professional as well as personal relationship saying, “I met Tim a century and a half ago” (via E! News).

Further she added, “My agent said, ‘Tim Burton’s interested in a phone call with you.’ And I said, ‘Tim Burton can phone me up, yeah.'” The 59-year-old actress recalled that Tim showed interest in casting her in 2011’s Planet of the Apes.

“His first sentence to me was—he’s got a very soft spoken gentle voice—‘I don’t want you to take this the wrong way, but you’re the first person I thought of to play the lead chimp in my movie Planet of the Apes,'” she shared.

Carter continued, “He said, ‘I have this feeling that you like to get away from what you look like.’ And I said, ‘You’re absolutely right.'” She further explained how she couldn’t say no to working with a “visionary” like Burton, even though the script of the 2001 film was “really, really bad.”

Carter also said that the moment when Stephen Sondheim greenlit her casting as Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd was an emotional one for the couple. “He came through to my side of the house. We had, famously, two houses next door to each other, but it was basically one house.

The actress continued, “He said, ‘Stephen Sondheim wants you.’ And then he burst into tears, because we did put ourselves and our relationship and everything under a lot of pressure by me going up for that. But it was worth every moment.”
