Cristiano Ronaldo and fiancée Georgina Rodríguez have chosen a very special venue for their impending wedding celebrations. The couple has chosen the 500-year-old Cathedral of Funchal in Ronaldo’s native Madeira as their wedding venue (via Marca).
The news, originally reported by Jornal da Madeira, confirms that the wedding will take place post the World Cup. Ronaldo has always expressed his love for his Portuguese roots. Hence, it comes as no surprise that the footballer has reportedly chosen Madeira for his wedding.
Funchal Cathedral, officially known as Se Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, was inaugurated in 1514. It is the cultural pride of Madeira and is renowned for its beautiful architecture. The location of the Cathedral holds a symbolic place in the 40-year-old footballer’s heart as well.
Funchal Cathedral is located less than two miles from the hospital where the footballer was born. Moreover, it is in the vicinity of the Nacional da Madeira field, where Ronaldo took his first steps as a budding footballer.
Ronaldo first met Rodríguez at a Gucci shop in Madrid, where she was working. He was playing for Real Madrid at the time (via BBC News). The couple shares five children between them.
The Al-Nassr FC star spoke about his engagement to Rodríguez in an interview with Piers Morgan. Morgan asked, “How did you propose?” Ronaldo replied nonchalantly, “She asked me for a ring.” He confessed that he had no plans of proposing to his partner and that their daughter nudged him to do so.
