A new round of fashion drama is surrounding Meghan Markle, this time over a green Galvan “Ushuaia” gown and an old Chanel dress. The Duchess of Sussex appeared in her new Netflix holiday special, “With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration,” wearing a dress that many viewers recognized from her 2022 Variety cover shoot. That moment sparked debate about claims that she once took certain wardrobe pieces from that shoot without officially clearing it.
Meghan Markle’s Chanel dress controversy could be a misunderstanding, claims source
According to Page Six, one fashion insider claimed that Meghan Markle “took the dress from the shoot without asking.” A second source confirmed to the outlet that she ended up with the $1,695 gown, while a third source insisted the whole situation was probably “a misunderstanding.”
That same insider said they had heard that “as a royal, she was required to archive all her looks,” implying that the dress may have been included in her personal fashion archive rather than borrowed by mistake. Although no official royal protocol backs up such a rule, the explanation has circulated widely. Another Page Six source dismissed that idea, calling it “a fib.” They added that the duchess or her team did not inform anyone about any archiving rule.
In a similar mix-up, Markle recently wore a black-and-white Chanel dress during a date night with Prince Harry in New York City — the same piece she reportedly wore in a 2022 The Cut feature. Observers noted the repeat outfit and tied it into the ongoing debate about how Markle handles designer items after photoshoots.
Journalist Vanessa Grigoriadis also discussed the topic on Andrew Gold’s “Heretics” podcast earlier this year, claiming that Markle took “a lot of stuff” after wearing it in “a very high-profile photo shoot.” Grigoriadis said, “What’s shocking about hearing these kinds of alleged stories is that somebody who is living in a $15 million plus mansion in Montecito, who’s just had $100 million deals, would care enough to take home some jewelry and clothes from a photoshoot that she can clearly afford.”
Despite the rumors, Markle has not commented publicly on the dresses or the matter. Besides, those close to her suggest the situation might have been a simple case of miscommunication.
