Eric Dane gets standing ovation for guest role as firefighter with ALS on Brilliant Minds
Series creator Michael Grassi sat down for an interview with USA Today and revealed a clip of Eric Dane portraying a firefighter suffering from ALS in a guest role on Brilliant Minds. In this clip, Dane’s character, Matthew, talks to Dr. Oliver Wolf (Zachary Quinto), speaking to him about his ALS treatment and how he hasn’t informed his family yet.
Grassi told the outlet how he was also dealing with a health emergency in his family when Dane’s team asked about the role. He said he leapt at the idea and quickly started discussing with Dane “this idea of ‘How does a family navigate a difficult diagnosis?’”
“There’s no right way or wrong way to do it,” Grassi continued, “And in our conversations, something that he was dealing with very much in real time, and I was dealing with in my life, and a lot of people deal with every day is, how do you navigate, how do you communicate and how do you accept help?” Further, the Brilliant Minds creator went on to explain how Dane received a standing ovation from the crew after the filming of he scene.
“I have never seen this happen in my entire career, but he essentially got a 10-minute standing ovation after shooting that scene, because it was so beautiful and so honest and so real,” Grassi shared.
“Also, while his character’s finding bravery, there’s a lot of bravery in Eric to tell the story as well,” Grassi shared. “To come out and share this part of yourself is vulnerable but also really important, and I think raises awareness and shows people that they’re not alone.”
