Stranger Things Star Reveals Living With Finn Wolfhard ‘Got Grosser’ Over Time

After nearly a decade of growing up together on Stranger Things, the cast has shared all from long shooting days and emotional farewells. However, Gaten Matarazzo just spilled that he and Finn Wolfhard actually lived together for a whole year while filming Stranger Things Season 5 in Atlanta. He added that it turned out to be “disgusting.”

Gaten Matarazzo says living with Finn Wolfhard during Stranger Things was ‘like a college experience’

On the November 19 episode of Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s Dinner’s on Me podcast, Gaten Matarazzo revealed that he and Finn Wolfhard chose to become roommates while shooting Season 5. At first, he said it felt fun, almost like a taste of college life, but a few months in, things changed. Matarazzo said he’d catch himself looking around the apartment thinking, “This place is disgusting. What are we doing?”

When the topic of who was messier came up, Matarazzo said it was a tie, with little difference between them. He and Finn “matched each other a little bit,” because they’ve known each other forever. Further, neither of them bothered to tell the other one to clean up. Instead, they shrugged everything off with a “Ah, f–k it. Whatever man. We’ll get to it later.”

At one point, it got so out of hand that they’d freak out whenever anyone mentioned stopping by. As Matarazzo joked, “Do not come 10 feet to our home.” Their place had clothes dumped everywhere and dishes stacked, and it just got grosser and grosser. Luckily, he added, they eventually pulled it together once the situation became too hard to ignore.

Matarazzo also opened up about wrapping Stranger Things. Since he joined the show at just 12, having the cast’s parents invited to the final day on set was a meaningful gesture. He called the last day “weird” but “fun,” and like a “graduation” day.

The 23-year-old also opened up about just how emotional things got while filming the final episode. In a sit-down with Collider, Matarazzo, Finn Wolfhard, Sadie Sink, and Caleb McLaughlin admitted that reading and shooting the finale was harder than they had expected. Finn said he didn’t think he’d shed a tear until he reached “one line” in the script that broke him. Matarazzo put a hand on his shoulder to calm him down.
