John Cena recently opened up about his retirement, admitting that it isn’t happening entirely on his own terms. He shared that when he first entered the industry, he promised fans that the moment he slowed down, he would bring his WWE journey to a close. While he can still compete in more matches, he believes refusing to retire now would only affect himself, the sport, and the fans who have supported him throughout his career.
John Cena talks about his WWE retirement
In conversation with the WWE Raw Recap show, Cena addressed his WWE retirement, revealing that he isn’t departing on his own terms. He said, “I’m not going out on my own terms. If I could do this in infinity, I would do it … I made a promise to the fan base when I started that when I got a step slower, I gotta walk away. Yeah, I could probably squeeze out more matches, but at what cost? “
Reflecting on how stretching his career could affect him, the sports, and the fans around, he added, “I do harm to myself, I do harm to the product, and you as a fan who’s allowed me the opportunity for over two decades to spend time with you, you leave feeling bad or sad.” At present, he has only two matches left until he retires; one is WWE Survivor Series scheduled on November 29, and another is WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C., on December 13.
Earlier, in a conversation with Good Morning America, Cena also shared whether he had any plans to unretire in the future. He said, “There is no way. There is absolutely… I don’t want to speak in absolutes, because I don’t want to close any opportunity, but I made a promise to the fans who’ve allowed me to be here for a quarter of a century. They allowed me to sit with you today. I wouldn’t want to disrespect them like that. This is an event — when people attend, it’s very exclusive.”
The Cenation leader recently added two major milestones to his illustrious career, winning a 6-Man Tag match at Madison Square Garden and becoming the Intercontinental Champion. At Survivor Series, he’s set to defend his Intercontinental title against Dominik Mysterio.
