Adam Sandler Reveals What He Really Thinks About Wearing Suits

Adam Sandler might be Hollywood’s king of comedy, but when it comes to dressing up, he’s definitely not in on the joke. The actor, famous for rocking oversized tees, hoodies, and basketball shorts, recently had to swap comfort for class while promoting his new movie, Jay Kelly, alongside George Clooney and Laura Dern. However, Sandler’s not loving it one bit. In true Sandler fashion, he called the whole experience “horrendous.”

Adam Sandler opens up about his dislike for wearing suits during the Jay Kelly press tour

In a chat with Entertainment Tonight, Adam Sandler shared his fashion struggles during the Jay Kelly press tour. “It’s been horrendous,” he joked in classic Sandler manner. “I don’t like the feeling. I think I only have three different suits and one of them I don’t even like.”

True to himself, the actor admitted he’s never been one for Hollywood’s high-fashion scene.“I can’t stand the pants, I can’t stand the jackets, the stupid shirts — hate them all,” he said, proving once again that comfort will always be his red-carpet look of choice.

Even when people told him he looked great all dressed up, Sandler couldn’t fake it. His honest response was “No… thank you,” he said with a laugh.

However, it appears that George Clooney might be the reason behind Sandler’s recent fashion upgrade. At the Jay Kelly premiere during the New York Film Festival, Clooney revealed that he’s the one who has been trying to get the Happy Gilmore star to ditch the baggy shorts.

“I actually [have] been making Adam wear suits,“ Clooney told PEOPLE. “Don’t you think he looks nicer instead of those big, baggy shorts?”

Funnily enough, Sandler’s love for baggy shorts and oversized tees has turned into a cultural phenomenon. Fans on TikTok reportedly even coined it “Sandlercore,” a style trend celebrating his zero-fuss attitude and unapologetic comfort.

“You know, this is an accidental thing,” the actor told PEOPLE in a 2024 interview. “But here I am wearing goofy clothes, and I don’t know. I don’t think about it.”

And while Sandler might hate dressing up, his work in Jay Kelly is earning lots of love. Clooney, who plays the film’s lead, told Vanity Fair that Sandler’s performance proves he is a “beautiful, heartfelt, and soulful actor.”
