Game of Thrones AI Art Accusations Addressed by George R.R. Martin’s Team

George R.R. Martin’s team has finally addressed the backlash surrounding the latest edition of A Feast for Crows, which fans claimed was created using generative AI. It is the fourth novel in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, which serves as the material for the Game of Thrones universe. The accusations came after the release of Penguin Random House Worlds’ twentieth anniversary edition of the novel.

Accusations recently surfaced about the latest edition of A Feast for Crows. They claimed that it allegedly featured odd anatomical distortions, repeated character models, and offbeat details that resembled generative AI.

Consequently, author George R. R. Martin’s team faced immense backlash. Fans argued that the art resembled generative AI and seemed to draw from online fan art.

In response, Raya Golden, the manager of art direction and licensing, posted on Martin’s Not a Blog to address the issue. “My name is Raya Golden, and I manage the art direction and licensing development here at Fevre River, working closely with GRRM as his schedule will allow. But I alone am responsible for approving all the licensed art that accompanies our SOI&F book-driven materials,” the post began.

“Recently, there have been accusations floating around that the Penguin Random House’s illustrated edition of A Feast For Crows was produced using AI generative art. To our knowledge and as presented by the artist who completed the work in question, there was no such programming used,” Golden continued.

Golden added, “While he is a digital multimedia artist and relies on digital programming to complete his work, he has expressed unequivocally that no AI was used, and we believe him,” denying the rumors of using AI-generated art.

The post concluded with, “The official word from our office is, of course, that we do not willingly work with A.I. generative artists in any way, shape, or form.”

Despite the clarification, there remain doubts in the minds of fans. Moreover, this has been a recurring theme in many works recently.

Meanwhile, George R.R. Martin has yet to comment on the accusations personally. However, he has previously criticized AI and its usage.
