Apple plans to add numerous new satellite-based features in the upcoming iPhones, as per the latest reports. While iPhones already boast many features that are linked to satellites, it seems that Apple’s plans include new features that would further accentuate them and make the product even more user-friendly.
iPhone to get new features, claims report
Apple iPhones already support satellite connectivity and boast certain features like texting, calling emergency services, and contacting roadside assistance via satellites.
However, a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claimed that the brand will soon add much more to the list. The new features will reportedly include an API that allows app makers to support satellite connections in their own apps, support for 5G NTN, and a version of Apple Maps that allows users to navigate without a cell or Wi-Fi connection.
Other features include increased support for “natural usage,” which would make satellite connectivity easier without pointing the phone towards the sky, and support for sending photos in the Messages app using satellite connectivity.
The outlet further stated that the basic access to these rumored features would be free for all users. Instead, customers will pay carriers for more advanced support. However, Apple’s satellite partner, Globalstar, will reportedly need to amp up its features to support these massive changes.
Moreover, Gurman noted that if SpaceX acquires Globalstar, the updates could roll out faster, and Apple could reach its satellite targets much sooner. Nevertheless, these new features will significantly revamp the way iPhones function, providing more streamlined connectivity and ease of access.
Additionally, The Information reported another feature that could improve 5G networks by allowing them to connect to satellites. This could change the way consumers use mobile phones, and could pave the way for a very different future in this field.
Meanwhile, iPhone users should stay tuned for more details, which should arrive soon.
