Tom Cruise still sends his now 31-year-old co-star from War of the Worlds shoes every year. Dakota Fanning, who played Cruise’s daughter in the aforementioned 2005 sci-fi action film, spoke about the yearly gift she receives from him during a recent talk show appearance. Fanning explained the start of this tradition and what kind of shoes the Mission Impossible actor sends her.

Even after responding to the same question on multiple occasions, no one fails to ask Dakota Fanning about her gifts from Tom Cruise. During her recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Andy Cohen asked her whether Cruise still sends her shoes on her birthday. Fanning responded, saying, “Yes, he does.” Cohen then went on to ask Fanning about the kind of shoes she receives, to which she replied, “Really nice shoes.”
Fellow guest Brittany Snow, also sitting on the couch with Fanning, innocently interrupted saying, “I have so many questions.” As Fanning explained how simple it is, she said, “He’s just always given me shoes.” Snow then again went on to ask, “But are they nice shoes, are they sneakers? Or are they like…?” before she could ask about what happens if Fanning’s shoe size changes. The Watchers actress explained that Cruise always adapted to her changing shoe size.
Earlier, Fanning also spoke on the same topic during a morning interview with TODAY’s Craig Melvin. She shared that she does use the pairs she receives. However, she added, “But I’ll keep them forever. It’s such a great memory, and it’s a way that he checks in with me every year. It’s really generous.”
Fanning also revealed how the tradition started. She told Melvin how adult-sized shoes had just started fitting her at the time, and Cruise gifted her a pair every year since then, keeping the tradition going for over 20 years.
