Jared Leto-led Tron: Ares is facing a disappointing box office run. New report indicates that the film may earn even less than the actor’s 2022 superhero film, Morbius. The sci-fi sequel has struggled to attract a strong audience. This has raised concerns about its performance and the future of the Tron franchise.
Tron: Ares’ worldwide box office haul could fall short of Morbius’ collection
The actor and musician’s latest film, Tron: Ares, is struggling at the global box office. The sci-fi sequel is projected to finish its theatrical run below the worldwide earnings of Jared Leto’s 2022 superhero film Morbius.
According to recent box office data, Tron: Ares has earned about $69 million domestically and over $66 million from international markets. This brings its worldwide total to approximately $135.4 million. The film saw a steep 55.5% decline in its fourth weekend, collecting only $2.8 million internationally.
At its current rate, the third movie in the Tron franchise is expected to close around $150 million globally. This falls short of Morbius’ $167.4 million total. With an estimated production cost of $220 million, the film’s weak commercial run makes it one of Disney’s most significant financial setbacks this year.
Released worldwide on October 10, Tron: Ares follows a digital program named Ares as he enters the real world. Directed by Joachim Rønning, it features Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, and Jeff Bridges.
In an earlier conversation with GamesRadar+, Rønning discussed the decision to reintroduce the iconic villain Sark in the film. He explained that they deliberately included the brief appearance to suggest the potential for future developments. Rønning noted, “And then the other thing was bringing back Sark, even though it’s at the very end, it’s just like hinting [at] something to come.”
With low returns for Tron: Ares at the box office, the franchise now faces an uncertain future.
