Robert Irwin reveals he nearly died after DWTS Season 34 performance
During Week 8 of “Dancing with the Stars” Season 34, Robert Irwin had a terrifying moment when he accidentally inhaled a piece of confetti while performing in the team dance.
“I almost died tonight,” Irwin told Entertainment Tonight in a backstage interview. “I choked on a piece of confetti after the team dance.” Recalling the moment, he said, “I went over to Whitney, and I think they cut away.”
Whitney Carson, Irwin’s pro dance partner, jumped in with visible concern, “You actually choked?”
The 21-year-old conservationist responded, “I inhaled a piece of confetti. No, I was… I couldn’t breathe.” He then turned to Carson and explained, “I went over to you and I’m like…” silently enacting himself choking on something. “And I just went, ‘Ugh!’ It just popped out. I’m not even kidding.”
When the interviewer said, “Thank goodness. Robert Irwin is still here with us and you’ll be dancing next week,” to which Irwin replied, “I nearly wasn’t.” Carson admitted that she was unaware of the incident at the time. However, said that she would’ve been a “shield” to protect him if she had known.
Despite the scare, Irwin and Carson later continued to deliver a strong performance. Their performance of The White Stripes’ “Icky Thump” earned high praise and nearly perfect scores from judges.
At the end of the episode, Danielle Fishel, known for her role in Boy Meets World, and her partner, Pasha Pashkov, were eliminated. They scored a total of 34 out of 40, the lowest of the night, after performing to Aerosmith’s “Dream On.”
