Stranger Things star Maya Hawke has divulged that her mother, Uma Thurman, gave her some amusing advice before she signed on to Quentin Tarantino‘s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood film. In a recent discussion, the star kid recalled her experience on the set of the visionary director’s 2019 hit, noting that she received a crisp warning from her mother about working with the two-time Academy Award winner.
Uma Thurman shared a warning to Maya Hawke
During her appearance on the November 4 episode of the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast, Maya Hawke revealed that Uma Thurman jokingly advised her not to remove her shoes while filming with Quentin Tarantino. Thurman’s quip was aimed at the acclaimed filmmaker’s infamous overuse of foot shots in his projects, which has given rise to a running joke in the industry that Tarantino harbors an obsession with bare feet.
“Keep your shoes on,” Hawke noted, recalling her mother’s advice, who had collaborated with Tarantino on 1994’s Pulp Fiction and the two Kill Bill movies. Amy Poehler repeated her guest’s statement as the two burst out laughing. Adding to the joke, the Parks and Recreation alum stated, “Keep ’em on, baby. Perfect advice. Perfect.”
Notably, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood showcased several bare-foot shots of the likes of Margot Robbie, Margaret Qualley, and Dakota Fanning. Nevertheless, Hawke seems to have taken her mother’s advice to heart, as the movie did not feature any feet shots of the 27-year-old actress.
Maya, the daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, also revealed that visiting her parents on the sets of their films during her childhood instilled a love for acting in her. She remarked, “It was like this safe, little world where I could be alone. No one needed to be watching me. I could walk over to Crafty and take cookies and M&M’s, and gummy bears, and get them, and I could go watch the stunt people practice,” before adding, “It’s really where I fell in love with acting, backstage at the theater and on set.”
