Sydney Sweeney might be swapping the glam of Hollywood for some time in the ring. The Euphoria and Anyone But You star shared that while training for her upcoming biopic, Christy, where she plays boxing icon Christy Martin, she actually fell in love with the sport. Now, with the film dropping on November 7, Sweeney says she’s genuinely thinking about picking up the gloves for real.
Sydney Sweeney shares that she is up to make a career in boxing
In an interview with SportsCasting, Sydney Sweeney confessed that midway through filming Christy, she started questioning her career path.
“There was a moment in the middle of filming where I was like, ‘Should I give it all up and fight because I love this?’” she said. The actress also revealed that boxing legend Christy Martin has even offered to sign her up for a charity match.
Sweeney’s preparation for Christy was no basic movie workout. She trained under Grant Roberts, the same strength coach who brought Hilary Swank into shape for Million Dollar Baby, and pro boxing coach Matt Baiamonte.
For nearly two and a half months, her schedule consisted of lifting weights in the morning, three hours of boxing in the afternoon, and another round of lifting at night.
“I put on 35 pounds,” she revealed. “I started losing weight once I upped my boxing time and had to find that balance, just continually pounding more and more protein shakes.”
Sweeney’s love for boxing didn’t stop when the cameras did. Her favorite move was the left hook, which she spent hours perfecting.“I loved it. I worked hardest on that left hook,” she said. “And I think what would get me through a fight is that I can take a punch. I wouldn’t quit.”
And while she hasn’t officially signed up for a real match yet, don’t count it out. The idea of a charity fight starring Sydney Sweeney doesn’t sound that crazy anymore, especially since, as she put it, “a few boxers have already slid into my DMs.” Even Christy Martin teased that she had few in mind.
Sweeney’s not hanging up her Hollywood gloves anytime soon, but her growing love for boxing might just be the start of an unexpected and new chapter in her career.
