Daniel Day-Lewis opens up about being drawn into the “handbags-at-dawn” conflict between Jeremy Strong and Brian Cox. Earlier, Cox had criticized Strong’s method acting techniques, calling them “f**king annoying.” While he acknowledged Strong as a talented actor, he noted that such method approach is quite broad and that understanding the character is only one part of the craft.
Daniel Day-Lewis addresses Brian Cox’s remarks on method acting
In a conversation with Big Issue, Day-Lewis revealed that he was surprised to be accidentally drawn into the Succession actors’ feud.
He said, “Listen, I worked with Brian Cox once and got somehow drawn into this handbags-at-dawn conflict inadvertently.” Appreciating Cox’s skill set, he added, “Brian is a very fine actor who’s done extraordinary work. As a result, he’s been given a soapbox… which he shows no sign of climbing down from. Any time he wants to talk about it, I’m easy to find.”
Day-Lewis reveals that if he thought he had caused a hindrance in Cox’s work process, he would have felt “appalled.” He further stated that he “don’t think it was like that. So I don’t know where the fuck that came from. Jeremy Strong is a very fine actor, I don’t know how he goes about things, but I don’t feel responsible in any way for that.”
Previously, Strong has addressed Cox’s strong criticism of his method of acting style in an interview with GQ. He explained, “Everyone’s entitled to have their feelings. Brian Cox, for example, he’s earned the right to say whatever the f*** he wants. There was no need to address that or do damage control… I feel a lot of love for my siblings and my father on the show. And it is like a family in the sense that, and I’m sure they would say this, too, you don’t always like the people that you love. I do always respect them.”
