Emma Stone & Jesse Plemons Talk About Bugonia’s Surprising Climax

Bugonia cast members Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons recently opened up about the ending of their new film. In a recent interview, the actors had a lot to say about their own perspectives on the film’s ending. However, fans seem to have landed on two opposing extremes in their attempts to interpret the ending.

Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons discuss Bugonia ending

While speaking to Entertainment Weekly about the gruesome ending of Bugonia, Jesse Plemons and Emma Stone shared their own views on the narrative. Plemons explained to the outlet how his character, Teddy, says some things throughout the film that the audience may objectively think are true. However, he adds that Teddy then follows up with some utterly nonsensical statements.

“It felt very, very close to the very myopic ways in which a lot of us can go through life, where there is very little room for multiple ways of thinking or for multiple things to be true at once. We get this tunnel vision,” Plemons spoke of the film’s narrative.

The plot of the film follows Michelle Fuller (Emma Stone), the powerful CEO of a big company, who gets kidnapped by Teddy (Jesse Plemons), a conspiracy theorist. Accusing her of being an alien, set to destroy mankind, he tortures her in his basement. Towards the end, when Michelle confesses that she’s an alien empress from the Andromeda Galaxy, things start to get nastier. While she confirms a few of Teddy’s theories about her, she asserts that he is wrong about her people’s intentions. Stone, as Michelle Fuller explains to Plemons’ Teddy, that her Andromedan people were the ones to create humans.

As this goes down, it remains uncertain whether Michelle is making up a story to escape or is telling the truth. Very soon, the narrative takes shape when Teddy asks Michelle to take him to her mother ship. Here, she reveals that a closet in her office functions as a portal to the mothership. This leads to the film’s final moments, which culminate in a highly graphic climax.

Stone spoke of the blood-soaked finale, saying, “I’m being really serious. It was unbelievable. But stepping into that closet was really disgusting.”
