A trailer loaded with whipped cream was reportedly stolen in Guelph, Ontario. In the early hours of October 28, officers responded to a call on Speedvale Avenue West, where witnesses told them that a white Wabash-brand trailer had gone missing. Let’s take a closer look at the details of this unusual whipped cream heist.
Thieves steal $80K worth whipped cream in Ontario
As reported by CBC News, a refrigerated trailer carrying 30 pallets of whipped cream was stolen around 4:30 a.m. on October 28. The incident reportedly occurred near Speedvale Avenue West, near Woolwich Street. Investigators believe the thief hooked the trailer, reportedly carrying $80,000 worth of Gay Lea-branded whipped cream, to another vehicle and drove off with it attached.
Guelph police spokesperson Scott Tracey spoke to the publication about the theft. He mentioned that officers are unable to speculate whether the theft was of the trailer or the whipped cream. “We won’t know for sure what the motive was.” He added that even if the thief knew what was inside the trailer, the trailer’s value alone in this case is approximately $50,000.
Gay Lea Foods’ Director of Communications, Robin Redstone, said, “We are cooperating fully with law enforcement authorities and supporting their efforts to resolve the matter.” Police are widening the search for the trailer as they claim this theft is unique, unlike the previous “butter thefts” from the past year. CityNews reported that anyone with information should contact the police or Crime Stoppers.
Because whipped cream spoils quickly even when refrigerated, the company will have to recover the product swiftly to avoid significant losses. However, this unusual heist does not seem so unusual, as last month CTV News reported the theft of $35,000 worth of salsa and dips, according to the Essex County OPP.
