Sharon Stone defends Sydney Sweeney after jeans ad controversy
Sharon Stone publicly defended Sydney Sweeney following backlash over her American Eagle campaign during Variety’s Power of Women Los Angeles event on October 29. Stone attended the ceremony to present an award to Sweeney, who was one of the evening’s honorees. The actresses have been working together on Euphoria Season 3, which has been in production for several months.
The controversy began in July after American Eagle released an ad campaign featuring Sweeney with the slogan “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” a play on the phrase “great genes.” Critics accused the ad of glorifying Sweeney’s white heritage and physical appearance, sparking online debate over the campaign’s message.
Stone addressed the criticism while speaking to Variety senior entertainment writer Angelique Jackson, saying, “It’s okay to use what mama gave you. It’s really fine.” She continued, “It’s hard to be hot, and I think we all know that. It’s really okay to use every bit of hotness you have — right here, right now — and go for whatever that is. Everybody has their own certain kind of hotness, their own certain thing, and you’re supposed to go for that. Because who are you not to be beautiful? You know, who you are isn’t an accident.”
Stone also recalled a discussion she had with Sweeney during Euphoria filming, sharing that Sweeney took the criticism in stride and focused on her work. The two stars will appear together in the upcoming third season of Euphoria, which is currently in production.
