Throughout his long and illustrious career, Sylvester Stallone has headlined blockbuster franchises, action staples, and cult favorites. But in a recent interview, he surprised fans by giving a special shoutout to one film that didn’t get its flowers back in the day.
Sylvester Stallone says Demolition Man is “one of the few films” that really holds up
In a chat with GQ, Sylvester Stallone said Demolition Man is “one of the few films that really holds up.” Directed by Marco Brambilla, the movie teamed Stallone with Wesley Snipes and Sandra Bullock. Stallone plays John Spartan, a cop frozen in time, opposite Snipes’ unhinged villain Simon Phoenix and Bullock’s officer Lenina Huxley.
When it came out, critics called it entertaining but uneven, though looking back now, many say it actually predicted a lot about digital surveillance and cookie-cutter media long before they became real.
Stallone praised his Demolition Man co-star Wesley Snipes, crediting him for bringing to life a truly unforgettable villain. He described Snipes as an “energetic” and “good fighter.”
The Tulsa King star continued, “When we were doing kicks, there were some of these, like a plate here, so he could really lay into me, and I could feel it, and it was good.” He added, “But Wesley, he really dug down there and gave a very memorable character. He did things with his hair and his voice, and he was good. He was at the top of his game then.”
Stallone also gave props to the film’s production design crew for going all-in on practical sets during some of Demolition Man’s scenes. The action icon, who’s pulled off more than his share of risky stunts, admitted the movie had “the two most dangerous stunts” of his entire career.
One of them had him getting snatched and tossed around by a massive metal claw. “That thing was no joke,” he said, explaining how the hydraulics sometimes went off balance and the claw’s force could easily tear through you if it misfired.
