Grey’s Anatomy fans have been hooked by the on-again, off-again romance between Dr. Maggie Pierce and Dr. Winston Ndugu for years. Their fiery, messy relationship came to a touching end in Season 20, but with Maggie back in Season 22, fans can’t help but wonder about a possible reunion.
Kelly McCreary says both Maggie and Winston have ‘moved on’ in Grey’s Anatomy
In a recent interview with Soaps, Kelly McCreary, who plays Maggie, opened up about where the couple could go next.
McCreary explained that her character, Maggie, is “very pragmatic,” so she’ll always have love and respect for her ex, Winston Ndugu. There are no “hard feelings.” Maggie has “made her decisions” and “moved on” with her life, and so has Winston.
McCreary was asked the same question in an interview with PEOPLE when she was parting ways with the show in 2023. She said their split wasn’t messy. “They didn’t leave a lot of wreckage or poison behind. They reconciled. They had an understanding.”
McCreary also added that their breakup was friendly. “They really empathized with each other and both felt heartbroken over it.” She thinks that kind of mutual respect keeps the door open, saying, “At the very least, there’s potential for them to work together again. And beyond that I think anything is possible.”
Even with that openness, McCreary made it clear that Maggie and Winston have both moved on in their personal lives. She explained that Maggie choosing to become a single mother with a donor shows she has her priorities straight. This hints that while a reunion isn’t completely off the table, a full-blown romance is very unlikely.
As of Season 22, Maggie and Winston’s story still keeps fans talking. Their friendly split in Season 20 let both characters go their own way. Maggie is back in Seattle and is expecting, while Winston is busy at Grey Sloan Memorial, focusing on his career and personal life.
Kelly McCreary was a series regular on Grey’s Anatomy for nine seasons before leaving in 2023, with her final episode airing that year. There was speculation that she might return to the show full-time.
Season 22 confirmed her comeback, but fans hoping she’d reunite with her old flame were left disappointed, and it looks like that romance isn’t coming back.
