Spotify to Restrict Kids From Accessing ‘Explicit Content’

Spotify has now expanded its managed accounts for young listeners and added seven new markets. This allows parents or guardians to better control the content their children listen to on the app. Under a Family Plan, parents can now restrict children aged 13 or younger from listening to explicit content.

Spotify releases parental control feature to restrict kids from accessing explicit content

Spotify has released a managed family account option for its Premium users in seven countries: the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, and the Netherlands. This feature provides a separate listening experience for young users while keeping their activity separate from adult family members’ accounts.

The features include creating playlists and saving songs. Children will also be able to receive personalized recommendations within the child-specific profile on the main Spotify app, along with curated music suggestions tailored to their age group and listening history to ensure a safe, engaging experience.

The parental controls include an Explicit Content Filter that blocks any music marked as explicit. Parents can also restrict the playback of specific artists or songs and hide Canvas (a short-form video feature) from their children’s profiles. The message tool that Spotify released earlier will not be available on children’s accounts.

Access to these controls lies entirely in the hands of the Family Plan manager. Plays from an adult user’s account will not affect a child’s recommendations or listening data. Managed accounts are completely separate from other profiles. Spotify states that this separation helps children develop their listening habits without interfering with others’ profiles, providing families with a safer and more customized music environment overall.

Families with children under 12 who want to use this feature can download the Spotify Kids app. It can be included with their Premium Family subscription or used as a separate experience, depending on the family’s needs.
