Comedian Tig Notaro opened up about her rift with her former podcast co-host, Cheryl Hines. She stated that Hines’ husband, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s, beliefs were like a “gnat” on her arm, and “it just got hard” to maintain their relationship.
Tig Notaro addresses why she and Cheryl Hines had a falling out
During Tom Papa’s Breaking Bread podcast, Tig Notaro recalled the days leading up to her fallout with her friend and former co-host, Cheryl Hines.
Notaro shared that Hines was one of her “favorite friends to be ridiculous with” and with whom she could take the “pressure off” while watching new documentaries every week.
The pair hosted their podcast, Tig and Cheryl: True Story, where they’d invite celebrities and talk about a new documentary. However, the tension between the two grew when Hines’ husband, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., announced his presidential run as an independent. Later, he dropped out and announced his support for Donald Trump.
The One Mississippi actress said, “Cheryl’s married to Bobby Kennedy Jr. When he was announcing his run, I just felt like I needed to step away, because there are beliefs that were like a gnat on the arm years ago that were getting further into the spotlight.”
“My friendship with Cheryl predated her marriage to Bobby,” Notaro continued. “He was in environmental law. And again, other beliefs he had were like a gnat on my arm. But then it started to grow, and Cheryl wanted me to hear Bobby out. They had these good ideas, and I was like, ‘I can’t, I can’t, I can’t.’ I didn’t, just didn’t trust it. And then he endorsed Trump, and then it just got hard.”
The host stated, “It seemed like she was trying to kind of distance herself from it at first.” Notaro responded, saying, “When somebody is like, ‘Oh, we don’t agree on everything’ within a marriage, that is so vague.” She jokingly added that she and her wife, Stephanie, don’t agree on the temperature when they go to bed.
“It’s not my world. It’s a hard pass,” Notaro explained.
She concluded the topic by saying, “Cheryl did bring me so much joy. But that’s what I’m looking for, is, I want to get back to prioritizing people that bring me joy and workloads that bring me joy.”
