Michael J. Fox Reveals Back to the Future Co-Star Who Used To Create ‘Friction’ on Set

Michael J. Fox’s new memoir, called Future Boy: Back to the Future and My Journey Through the Space Time Continuum, has revealed how Crispin Glover caused trouble on the set of Back to the Future. In his book, Fox does not just revisit the film’s creation, but also recalls his experiences working with Glover.

In his memoir, the Family Ties star has revealed an interesting story involving his Back to the Future co-star.

Crispin Glover plays George McFly in the 1985 film, and, as per Michael J. Fox, he did not follow the planned blocking. The latter mentioned in his book how Glover would keep walking out of the camera lane. As a result, the crew struggled to keep him in the frame.

“Nobody puts Crispin in a box. But that didn’t prevent the camera crew from literally building a box around him,” recalled Fox while describing a particular scene. (via US Weekly)

Even though the team worked it out, the 64-year-old actor revealed that it created “tension” with the director Bob Zemeckis and writer Bob Gale. He wrote, “As Crispin approached the camera, he was meant to stay in a lane between the clothesline and me. But Crispin had a different plan. My guess is that he saw George as a wanderer, a free spirit who traveled in random patterns — in this case, perpendicular to the camera.”

The Teen Wolf star then shared how a crew member then “fabricated a miniature corral made of sandbags and C-stands, trapping Crispin into adhering to the parameters of the shot.”

Nevertheless, though Michael J. Fox said that even though Crispin Glover’s actions would cause chaos on the set of Back to the Future, he admired the actor. Fox called his performance “downright hypnotic.” Furthermore, he said that he loved working with Glover even when his methods made filming very unpredictable.

Fox mentioned, “I loved working with him. His talent was unquestionable, although his methods sometimes created friction. Still, I respected how he remained true to George (as he understood and embodied him).”

Interestingly, Michael J. Fox even sent a heartfelt letter to Crispin Glover while penning his memoir. “Your performance is richer and deeper every time I see it. In fact, I skip over my bits to watch yours,” it read. “Granted, we didn’t talk much during production, so I never had the chance to say that you are a brilliant actor, and I was thrilled to work with you.”
