Spears’ ex opens up about their volatile relationship, substance use, and emotional breakdowns that marked the final years of their marriage in an interview with The New York Times.
Federline and Spears married in 2004 and finalised their divorce in 2007, following a lengthy custody dispute.
Federline wrote about his growing worries over Spears’ mental health, saying he has watched from afar as their two sons, Sean Preston, now 20, and Jayden James, 19, became increasingly uncomfortable around their mother.
He recounts how the boys once refused to return to Spears’ home, claiming she frightened them. “They would awaken sometimes at night to find her standing silently in the doorway, watching them sleep — ‘Oh, you’re awake?’ — with a knife in her hand,” he wrote. “Then she’d turn around and pad off without explanation.”
A spokesperson for Spears declined to comment on Federline’s claims. However, in her own memoir, which is currently being adapted into a film, Spears rejects accusations of substance abuse and insists her custody battle with Federline was deeply traumatizing.
Federline, who has appeared in several reality shows, maintains that he has never spoken ill of Spears and claims his priority has always been their children.
“I’ve never, ever, once, been against Britney,” he said in an interview with the NYT. “I’ve only tried to help my sons have an incredible relationship with their mother. My kids do not know the woman that I married. And I’ve spent two decades trying to bridge that gap.”
The “Oops I did it again” hitmaker alleges that her ex-husband limited her access to their children and “tried to convince everyone” that she was unstable to gain full custody. Despite their estrangement, Spears has recently expressed hope of rebuilding her bond with Sean and Jayden.
