Nicole Kidman Reveals What She Had Planned After Divorcing Tom Cruise & Before Meeting Keith Urban

Nicole Kidman spoke candidly to Tatler about one of the chapters of her life, her divorce from Tom Cruise, her struggles with fertility, and how she eventually found peace and love again. During her marriage to Cruise, Kidman experienced both an ectopic pregnancy and a miscarriage, a series of events that left her believing she might never conceive. The couple went on to adopt two children, Isabella and Connor, who are now adults.

Although Kidman has rarely discussed her separation from Cruise or her current relationship with her adopted children, she reflected on society’s obsession with biological motherhood, saying, “Whether you’re an adoptive mother, a foster mother, or a biological mother — it’s the emotion of attaching to a child and helping to guide and raise them that is important.”

The Academy Award winner expressed deep empathy for women who have experienced infertility and loss.

She went on to reflect on the pain of miscarriage and the deep desire to become a mother. “That yearning — it’s a huge, aching yearning. And the loss! The loss of a miscarriage isn’t talked about enough. That’s massive grief to certain women,” she said. “There’s an enormous amount of pain, and an enormous amount of joy on the other side of it when you have the child.”

Just over a year after finalizing her divorce from Cruise, Kidman won an Academy Award for “The Hours,” but that didn’t bring her the fulfillment she hoped for. “‘OK, what am I actually doing? Where do I go from here? What do I do? I’m divorced, I’m on my own, what’s next?’” she shared.

In the months that followed, Kidman began envisioning a quiet life. She planned to buy a farm in Oregon, live alone, and perhaps have a baby as a single parent. “And then,” she said, “along came Keith.”

The couple eventually got married and spent their first year together living on a farm. At 40, Kidman discovered she was pregnant. “It was a miracle because I’d thought I’d never be able to have a baby in my lifetime,” she shared. “I’d had a lot of complications, and I don’t mind speaking about it, because I think it takes the onus off it for (other women).”
