Mercy’s Chris Pratt Reveals What Drew Him to Timur Bekmambetov’s AI Thriller

Chris Pratt recently stated that his upcoming AI thriller, Mercy, is unlike anything he has ever done. Pratt stars in the movie alongside Rebecca Ferguson. Timur Bekmambetov, known for movies such as 2008’s Wanted and 2012’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, directed the movie from a script by Marco van Belle.

Chris Pratt explains why AI thriller Mercy is a ‘departure’ for Marvel star

Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt appeared on the stage of a panel at New York Comic Con on Thursday alongside several other members of the cast and crew for his upcoming movie, Mercy, and spoke about why he thinks that this sci-fi feature is a “departure” for him as an actor.

“He [Pratt’s character] is a homicide detective in the near future, and a guy who has seen a lot, been through a lot,” Pratt explained. “He’s part of this special new Mercy program that they’ve designed, essentially using AI to modify their core system to be more efficient, and to face the rise in capital crime in this version of Los Angeles. They just want to get these murderers off the street and send a message.” (via The Hollywood Reporter)

Mercy revolves around Pratt’s homicide detective, as he tries to prove his innocence in the case of his wife’s murder. Ferguson portrays the advanced A.I. system called Judge Maddox, in charge of deciding the detective’s fate as part of the titular program.

Bekmambetov, who was also on the panel, agreed with Pratt’s sentiments. “There is something new for Chris in this movie. It’s his next iteration,” the filmmaker said. “He plays a dark and very vulnerable character in a very dramatic story.” He then noted that though Pratt is “famous for his action movies,” the actor is “playing a dramatic role” in Mercy.

Mercy opens in theaters on January 23, 2026.
