Chicago P.D. showrunner Gwen Sigan has confirmed that Officer Kevin Atwater and therapist Val Soto have officially gone their separate ways. The news comes amid growing speculation about the pair’s future following the previous season’s finale. Sigan also revealed how the split will shape Kevin’s character this season.
Gwen Sigan says Kevin and Val ‘have broken up’ on Chicago P.D.
Kevin Atwater’s love life has taken another complicated turn on Chicago P.D., with showrunner Gwen Sigan confirming that his relationship with Val Soto has officially come to an end.
Kevin’s relationship with Val began as a casual romance, which gradually developed into something deeper. However, the Season 12 finale hinted at tension in their relationship when Kevin missed her calls during an Intelligence case, leaving fans uncertain about their future. In addition, actress Natalee Linez, who played Val, joined Dick Wolf’s FBI offshoot, CIA, a move that confirmed her exit from Chicago P.D.
Sigan told Soaps.com, “They have broken up,” explaining that the breakup will open up a new chapter for Kevin. She said, “He’s in this very different spot of life. So we’ve got this great guest star that comes in and kind of shakes him up, and is very different from him, and [has a] very different perspective and [is] in a very different time in her life.”
Sigan states that the two become connected through a particularly difficult case, which opens new opportunities for Kevin. It also allows Kevin to reflect on his own life in a different way.
Previously, in a statement to Give Me My Remote, the showrunner also clarified that Atwater is entering a period of transition and reflection. “Atwater won’t be with Val this season, and due to that breakup, he’s in a really nice transitional phase,” Sigan said. She also explained how Kevin’s relationship with Val helped him with self-reflection.
