On Tuesday, September 30, Reggie Aqui, the anchor of ABC7 Mornings, emotionally announced that he’s leaving KGO-TV after a 10-year tenure. He took the opportunity to reflect on his journey and also addressed his colleagues and viewers during his speech.

Starting on a lighthearted note, he said, “10 years is a long time. In dog years, that’s like going from a puppy to a senior. Had I been good at math and science, I could have been a doctor in those 10 years.”

Aqui further added, “If this were a 10-year wedding anniversary, I would have a gift of tin or aluminum. So put me in Reynolds wrap, because this is both my ten-year work anniversary and my last day here at ABC7 News.”

Reflecting on his experiences, he said, “What am I proudest of in ten years? My Murrow Award—if I had one, I don’t. So it’s not industry accolades. And I really can’t pick a particular story or on-air moment because I’ve been on something like 8500 hours of news shows in those 10 years. I’m exhausted just thinking about that. I think my proudest moment, and the thing I’m going to take away from this experience, my relationships that we built.”

“Natasha, Mike, Alexis, Jessica, Jobina, Kumasi, Drew, Amanda, and you—my co-anchors,” he addressed viewers. “I’m including you because you’re always a part of this.”

The 48-year-old anchor continued, “Of course, I don’t know all your names. But when I meet you on the street, at the store, at my DMs, you tell me that we help make your day just a little bit better, and the news a little easier to swallow. To quote myself, ‘Everything is bad. Only it isn’t.’”

He concluded, “Ten years. I’m so happy it happened. I am sad that it’s over. And that’s perfect because that’s my favorite kind of emotion.”

Reggie Aqui served as a morning show anchor at ABC7 News Bay Area in San Francisco from 2015. Prior to ABC7, he worked at KGW-TV in Portland, Oregon, and anchored CNN’s streaming news service CNN.com Live in Atlanta.
