18 years after Gilmore Girls premiered its final episode on The CW, Lauren Graham, who played the self-reliant Lorelai Gilmore on the show, has spoken about an idea for a movie that would feature a much-awaited reunion of the original cast. In a recent interview, the Parenthood alum revealed that she has been thinking about the possibility of making a Gilmore Girls film for a long time, while also describing the basic setting for such a project in the process.
Lauren Graham says ‘a Christmas movie’ would be perfect for a Gilmore Girls reunion
During her recent red carpet appearance at the 2025 Emmy Awards, Lauren Graham had a brief discussion with The Hollywood Reporter about a potential Gilmore Girls reunion. During the conversation, Graham stated that a Downton Abbey-esque film would be a great way to bring the iconic comedy drama back.
“I thought we were done with that conversation, and I realized we are not. But I’ve been saying for a long time what I could see making sense is a Christmas movie in the tradition of Downton Abbey or those other kinds of shows that are over but then kind of come together, especially around the holidays. I think that would be very Gilmore-friendly,” Graham noted.
She then supported her reasoning by stating that the US does not have “enough holiday programming,” before clarifying that “football is not holiday programming.”
After concluding its seven-season run in 2007, Gilmore Girls returned for a four-part miniseries, subtitled A Year in the Life, in 2016 via Netflix. While it remains unclear if a Gilmore Girls movie will happen anytime in the near future, a documentary about the series is currently in the works. In an earlier interview with THR, producer Jim Demonakos stated that the project, titled Searching For Stars Hollow, “will reveal how Gilmore Girls came to life, why it continues to resonate across generations, and how its unique blend of humor, heart, and pop culture shaped a devoted worldwide fan community with an in-depth look at its creation and the connections it continues to foster.”
Searching For Stars Hollow has yet to receive an official release date.
